How Virtual Foreign Language Learning Stays Hands-On

Waldorf education is known for its holistic approach to engaging all aspects of our being—head, heart and hands. One might wonder if this is possible with online learning. It is possible!
Here is the secret... when the teacher loves what he does and has enthusiasm for the material he is bringing, magic happens! Even across the ether in distant lands, children can feel the energy pouring out of living learning and are captivated by each new song, story or expression.
It is especially easy for me, as the teacher of the foreign language (German and French) classes, to connect with students on all levels—head, heart and hands.
My time with the students is not stagnant, it is alive. Students engage their hands through movements that dance with the language. Their hearts are engaged through stories and singing. They are challenged in their thinking as they memorize the words that mean so much more than vocabulary to master for communication. The words they learn are the result of a living, breathing, cultural experience that has history and hope.
